Laundry A-Z
This Lingerie A-Z explains in a clear and understandable way some of the most important terms we use in our online shop to describe our nightwear, loungewear, swimwear and beachwear.
You will also find information on the wearing properties of the various fabrics we use for our nightgowns, pyjamas, loungewear sets, beach dresses and other garments, and you can also read about the different cuts and textile manufacturing processes.
A
A
Dart
Wedge-shaped seam to shape the body; this is necessary, for example, in the waist and bust area.
Ajour
Woven or knitted fabric with small, visible openings, created by transferring individual stitches to adjacent stitches.
A-line
Fashion silhouette for women's clothing with naturally narrow shoulders and a width that flares out towards the skirt hem. The waist is often shifted slightly upwards.
Allover Print
Patterns that extend continuously over the entire width of the fabric.
Animal Print
Animal fur and animal skin imitations as fabric prints.
Appliqué
Decorative ornament on garments, created by gluing or sewing on lace, embroidery or colorful fabric pieces. The cut edges are usually covered by decorative seams.
Breathability
Breathable fabrics transport moisture away from the skin to the outside, thus ensuring a pleasant and dry body feeling.
Burnout
By applying etching pastes to textiles, parts of the fabric are etched away. Usually, the base fabric consists of two different types of fibers, with one fiber not reacting to the etching paste, so no hole is created at the burned-out area, but a more transparent area. The treated fabrics then show a lace-like, translucent pattern.
Chemical Lace
Machine embroidery created by embroidering over a fabric base and then removing the superfluous, unembroidered base. The result is an openwork fabric that resembles needle lace.
B
B
Balloon shape
A silhouette that is narrow at the waist but wide at the hips, tapering towards the bottom.
Bandeau
Bikini or swimsuit with a straight silhouette. The straps of bandeau swimsuits or bikinis from our shop are usually detachable. The top resembles a wide band, which can be smooth or ruched and is sometimes tied in the middle. This style is particularly recommended for customers with a smaller bust.
Cotton
Cotton is the most commonly used material for our nightwear. It is obtained from the seed hairs of the cotton plant. For centuries, cotton has been used for textile production. Cotton is characterized by good care and wearing properties. It is very skin-friendly, feels pleasantly soft, and does not scratch. Furthermore, it is particularly suitable for sensitive skin as it has a low allergy potential. Cotton is very absorbent and can absorb up to 65% of its own weight in liquid, but the natural fiber dries relatively slowly. Since cotton is a very breathable material, one sweats less in cotton clothing than in clothing made of synthetic fibers. Cotton materials are also tear-resistant, flame-retardant, and do not charge electrostatically, but they wrinkle more easily than other materials. Cotton is particularly suitable for manufacturing nightgowns and pajamas as it ensures a pleasant body climate during sleep.
Bermuda
Shorts for men and women that reach to or just above the knee, but do not cover the knee.
Pin-tucks
Narrow, stitched fold, with the fold line on the right side of the fabric, pressed flat. Often, several parallel pin-tucks are used as decoration on nightgowns, pajamas, or beach dresses.
Bigshirt
Usually sporty, short nightgown with a straight cut, an approximate length of 95 cm, and no button placket.
Facing
- Decorative trim at the neckline, often made of contrasting, stitched fabric strips.
- Covering of decorations with fabric strips 5-15 cm wide.
Facing collar
- Sporty collar shape with a facing that often visually extends a concealed button placket.
- Collar consisting entirely of a facing.
Boxer shorts
Loosely cut, short men's underwear with straight legs and a fly, often with a prominent elastic waistband.
Underwire bra
The underwire is incorporated into the bra to stabilize and lift the bust. The underwires are usually made of thin metal coated with plastic. The metal thus prevents deformation due to body heat. The underwire bra stabilizes the bust and creates a beautiful décolleté. It is particularly suitable for larger cup sizes. Bras with underwires should be hand-washed or washed in a laundry bag.
C
C
Cache Coeur
A short, feminine wrap top, similar to a bolero, but crossed in front of the chest and tied at the back or chest with long ties.
Cape
Sleeveless, wide-cut cloak, usually with slit armholes, often with a hood.
Capri Pants
3/4-length trousers, often with short side seam slits.
Carrée Neckline
Rectangular neckline that emphasizes the décolleté.
Cargo Pocket
Double pocket with a rounded opening and a second, smaller pocket that is half visible.
Man-made Fibers
Collective term for all fiber materials produced by chemical-technical processes, e.g. viscose, polyamide, polyester and elastane.
Chiffon
Wafer-thin, veil-like fabric made of natural silk or polyester. Chiffon is transparent, with a slightly irregular surface, a veil-like appearance and a sandy feel.
Cotton made in Africa
CmiA is an initiative of the Aid by Trade Foundation and promotes sustainable cotton cultivation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative creates an alliance of international textile entrepreneurs who specifically buy and process the sustainably produced cotton from around 435,000 participating small farmers for the global market. The proceeds directly benefit the small farmers in the project countries, for example through social projects that primarily promote the expansion of school infrastructure in rural cotton regions. The cotton sold by CmiA has a significantly better ecological footprint than conventionally grown cotton.
Rösch Fashion GmbH has been a partner of the initiative since June 17, 2013.
Crochetta Seam
Lingerie finishing edge with a picot effect.
Cup
Sewn or molded bust cup of the bra, bikini or swimsuit, often also referred to as a "Körbchen" (literally, "little basket"). Rösch Fashion GmbH & Co.KG offers underwear in cups A, B, C and D and swimwear in cups B, C and D.
D

Degradé
Description for fabrics that show a uniform color gradient. Usually, it runs from light to dark, sometimes also from one shade to another. This color gradient is achieved by printing or a varying warp thread density.
Dessin
Woven, printed, or embossed pattern with color areas, outlines and contours, color gradations, and transitions.
Digital printing
In digital printing, no stencils are needed; instead, textile inks are applied directly to the materials. Digital printing thus enables high-quality, high-contrast, and photo-realistic prints. The wash fastness of digital prints is very good.
Double Rib
Double-sided knitted fabric in which at least two rows of purl stitches and two rows of knit stitches alternate, thus forming a gap between the ribs. The "ribs" are the knit stitch columns. Double rib is particularly elastic in the transverse direction and is therefore often used for cuffs, hipsters, briefs, pants, and undershirts.
Drapé
Gathering or drapery at the collar of feminine nightgowns or pajamas. This fashion detail resembles the waterfall collar.
E

Elastane
Light, smooth synthetic fiber with high elasticity and recovery.
Elastane is used for stretch fabrics and in blends of approx. 5% to improve wrinkle resistance and for increased wearing comfort. The synthetic fiber has low moisture absorption and guarantees permanent shape retention.
Elastane does not static cling, does not pill, and is primarily used for swimwear or in combination with viscose for underwear and beach dresses.
Elastic Single
Single jersey with elastane content.
Elastic Lace
Lace with elastane content.
Empire Style
Dresses and tops with an empire line usually have a horizontal seam directly below the bust. The silhouette widens fluidly and flows in an A-line shape to the hem. In contrast to the A-line, the raised waist is significantly emphasized here, for example by seams or gathers. This shape is ideal for hiding small curves.
F
F
Fine Rib
Fine knitted fabric made of cotton with ribs on both sides. The fabric is slightly elastic, fits well, does not bulk up and is therefore well suited for close-fitting cuts. Fine rib is often used for underwear and nightwear.

French Hem
see Scalloped Hem
Terry Cloth/Frotté
Voluminous plain weave fabric with special absorbency and pleasant feel. Characteristic are the small loops that create an uneven, rough surface and a fluffy feel. Terry cloth can absorb liquids well and is often used for home textiles or bathrobes.
Terry Fabric
Terry fabric is produced on special weaving machines that form loops during weaving. Unlike terry cloth/frotté, terry fabric has loops on both sides. A distinction is made between fluffy looped terry with good absorbency, firm twisted terry with a firm feel, and velvety velour terry, which, however, has little absorbency due to its cut loops.
G
G
Gassing
Burning off protruding fiber ends on yarns and fabrics. The treated goods become smoother, lint-free, and the risk of soiling and pilling is reduced.
Molded Cups
Soft-shell cups that are thermoplastically molded and therefore have no seams. They are very comfortable to wear, create a natural shape, and do not show under clothing. They are therefore particularly suitable for wearing under tight clothing.
H

Interlock
Fine, double-faced knitted fabric, identical on both sides, with a fine, smooth feel. Only knit stitches are visible on both sides of the fabric, which, unlike fine rib, are not separated by a channel. Interlock fabric is less stretchable than fine and double rib and therefore more dimensionally stable. Interlock is used for nightgowns, pajamas, T-shirts, and underwear. Interlock is also often referred to as double jersey.

L
L
Layered Look
Combination of different garments worn on top of each other, which do not necessarily have to match exactly and can be of different lengths
Lasercut
Thermal cutting process that guarantees a particularly precise cutting technique. Open edges that have been treated with a laser beam do not fray at the seams. In addition, patterns can be precisely cut out of fabrics using the laser-cut process. The textiles are only touched by the laser beam and are therefore not distorted. The melting of the material by the laser creates optimally sealed edges.
Layering
Layered look, i.e. garments worn in several layers on top of each other; in contrast to the Lagenlook (layered look), it is always short over long.
Leggings
Opaque and footless tights worn as trousers or for gymnastics; very variable in design and with different use properties, always figure-hugging, with elastane and often made of knitted or woven fabrics.
Linen
Cellulosic fiber obtained from the stems of the flax plant. Linen fabrics are usually heavier than cotton, are characterized by high tear strength and are inelastic and therefore susceptible to creasing. Linen fabrics feel cool and are very absorbent, so they are particularly comfortable to wear in hot climates. Linen is also not very susceptible to dirt and has a firm feel.
Braid
Two-dimensional, narrow braid used for edging seams and for decoration.
Lycra®
The fiber Lycra® is a brand of INVISTA. It is a highly elastic, synthetic fiber belonging to the elastane group.
Due to its elasticity, the fiber is mainly used for underwear and hosiery. Textiles with Lycra® only need to be pulled into shape after washing and offer a comfortable wearing experience.
Lyocell
Cellulosic chemical fiber produced industrially using a non-toxic solvent. These fibers have high dry and wet strength, are soft and absorb moisture very well. Lyocell textiles have a smooth and cool feel and are crease-resistant. Lyocell fibers are mainly used in nightgowns, pajamas and underwear. Lyocell is the generic fiber name and is offered by Lenzing AG under the brand name Tencel®.

Molding
Thermoplastic process to produce soft shell cups.
Multi(functional) Bra / Multi-Bra
Bra whose straps are variable and thus offers up to five different strap variations. It is usually possible to wear the multi-bra strapless, as a triangle bra, criss-crossed at the back, as a center-strap bra, and as an outer-strap bra. This allows the bra to be optimally combined with various cuts of T-shirts, blouses, and dresses.

or animal fibers such as wool and silk.
Negligee
A delicate, coat-like, knee- or ankle-length cover-up made of soft, flowing fabric, usually matching sleepwear.
Nicki (Velour)
Loop pile fabric where the loops are cut, creating a velvety surface with many small threads hanging from the fabric, while the reverse side remains smooth. When you run your hand with the nap, the fabric feels soft; against the nap, it feels rough. Nicki is elastic, breathable, and crease-resistant, making it particularly suitable for loungewear and casual clothing.

Slip-on shirt with a half button placket that transitions into a one-piece spread collar.
Polyacrylic
Polyacrylic is a fully synthetic fiber material consisting of at least 85% acrylonitrile. Due to the bulkiness of the fibers, polyacrylic textiles are soft and elastic and feel wool-like. However, polyacrylic has higher tear and abrasion resistance than wool, does not felt, and is not attacked by moths.
Polyamide
Fully synthetic fiber material that is highly elastic, tear and abrasion resistant, durable, and wrinkle-resistant. Polyamide has low moisture absorption, good colorfastness, and is very easy to care for.
Polyester
Fully synthetic fiber material characterized by very good dimensional stability, elasticity, lightness, and low creasing tendency. Polyester has low moisture absorption, good colorfastness, is very light-resistant, shrink-proof, and quick-drying.
Polyester-Cotton Blend
The polyester fibers make the textile more durable and less prone to creasing. However, the skin-friendly wearing properties of cotton are not lost.
Polyester-Viscose Blend
The polyester fibers make the textile more durable and less prone to creasing. The pleasant wearing properties of viscose are nevertheless retained.
Poncho
Sleeveless cape, consisting of a suitably cut piece of fabric with a hole in the middle for the head.
